Kuopio, Finland, 27 August 2026—Marginum Ltd, a Finnish medical technology company specialising in fluorescence-based optical tissue monitoring systems, has been awarded the 2026 Export2X Internationalisation Award by the Kuopio Region Chamber of Commerce. The recognition highlights growth companies from Northern Savonia that have successfully expanded into international markets.

The award recognises Marginum’s rapid international growth and successful commercialisation of research-based medical technology. Originating from research at the University of Eastern Finland and the Kuopio University Hospital Microsurgery Center, Marginum has developed the patented HIVEN® technology to support cancer surgery.

HIVEN® assists surgeons in detecting fluorescent tissue in real time during tumour surgery. The technology has progressed from research to a CE-marked medical device and has already been used in the treatment of more than 100 patients worldwide. Marginum is now continuing its international expansion, with the United States as a key target market.

“Receiving this award is a highly meaningful recognition for us. It provides valuable visibility for the work we have done in Finland to build a new medical technology product for international markets. The award is an important acknowledgement of our ambitious internationalisation efforts and their significance”, says Samu Lehtonen MD, CEO of Marginum.

In its rationale, the Growth and Finance Committee highlighted the impact of Marginum’s research-based innovation and the company’s exceptionally rapid progress towards international commercialisation.

“The societal impact of Marginum’s research-based innovation is remarkable in scale. In less than five years, the team has commercialised a globally relevant breakthrough technology for cancer treatment with significant potential for further expansion. Achieving CE marking within this timeframe alone is an exceptional accomplishment,” says Tiina-Liisa Liukkonen, Chair of the Growth and Finance Committee of the Kuopio Region Chamber of Commerce.

The Export2X Award was presented to Marginum at an invitation-only event hosted by the Kuopio Region Chamber of Commerce in Kuopio on 27 August 2026. At the same event, piling technology company Junttan Oy received the Kunnian Kukko Internationalisation Award.

The annual Export2X Internationalisation Award recognises growth companies from Northern Savonia that have successfully taken their first major steps in international markets. Previous recipients include Capalo AI (2025), Lehtomäen Metalli (2024), Delfin Technologies (2023), and Rammy (2022).
